UMC Maintenance Advisory: UMC Investigates Heat Leak from L15 Gen 2
During regular maintenance period, United Metrolite Central noticed that our own used ThinkPad L15 Gen 2a had thermal issues. UMC is investigating the root cause and comfirmed that found the issue was heat leak coming from SSD that no thermal pad installed. Since Lenovo removed the SSD thermal pad in many special-bid / fleet configuration, leaving NVMe with no proper heat path. This affects PCB motherboard and the battery zone (third-party battery installed on August 2025) caused by heat leak that NVMe couldn't cool down properly with expected at 64 °C max temperature for drive.
UMC is working to resolve the heat leak issue by adding for thermal pad to reduce the warm temperature to cooled temperature. This best method is 1.0mm thickness of thermal pad is recommended to apply for L15 Gen 2a. UMC is looking the temperature for battery and drive via HWiNFO and Lenovo Vantage.
Update on March 4, 2026: The Thermal issue was fixed with CPU thermal repaste. The operation was returned.
